Commander, American Forces Network Korea
LTC Michael T. Lawhorn
 

Mike Lawhorn enlisted in the United States Army shortly after high school graduation in 1982. In 1984 he underwent basic training at Fort McClellan, AL, and in 1986 was awarded an ROTC scholarship to attend Indiana University (IU) in Bloomington, IN. Graduating from Indiana University in June, 1989, he was commissioned a second lieutenant of Field Artillery. He has served in the Military Police, Field Artillery, Military Intelligence, and—most recently—Public Affairs career fields.

He has served in command and staff positions throughout the field Army in the United States and overseas. His public affairs assignments include serving as the Installation Public Affairs Officer, National Training Center and Fort Irwin at Fort Irwin, California (2002-2004), Division Public Affairs Officer, Second Infantry Division, Uijongbu, Korea, (2004-2005), and the Army’s Training With Industry Program at Fox News Headquarters in Manhattan, NY, (2005-2006).

His previous command assignments include: Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 704th Military Intelligence Brigade, Fort Meade, MD (1997-1998); and the 27th Public Affairs Detachment, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) at Fort Drum, NY (1998-2000).

His other leadership and staff assignments include: Platoon Leader, Alpha Battery, 1-77th Field Artillery (1992-1993); Deputy Battalion Intelligence Officer, 1-70th Armor Battalion (1993-1994)—both at Fort Knox, Kentucky—and two assignments as a Signals Intelligence Operations Officer at the National Security Agency, Fort Meade, Maryland, (1994-1997).

He holds a Master of Arts in Public Relations from the University of Maryland (2002) and a Bachelor of Arts degree (Sociology and Criminal Justice) from Indiana University (1989). He is a graduate of the Command and General Staff College (2004), Military Intelligence Officer Advanced Course, the Military Intelligence Electronic Warfare Officer Course, and various other military schools.

LTC Lawhorn assumed command of the American Forces Network of Korea on 21 July, 2006.

Born in Hamilton, Ohio, LTC Lawhorn is married to the former Dawn Howard of Edinburgh, Indiana. They have two daughters and this is the family’s second time in Korea as well.
